The Andhra Pradesh government has set an ambitious target to complete 11 major irrigation projects in North Andhra over the next two years, aiming to boost agricultural productivity and mitigate recurring drought conditions in the region. Progress was reviewed by Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu during a video conference held at his camp office in Vijayawada.
With an estimated investment of ₹2,000 crore, these projects are expected to bring 2.69 lakh acres under new irrigation while stabilising water supply to an additional 2.49 lakh acres. The government has emphasised cost efficiency, focusing on maximising irrigation benefits with optimal expenditure, particularly in drought-prone areas.
A key highlight of the review was the official gazette notification of the Vamsadhara Tribunal Award 2021, which resolves long-standing water-sharing disputes with Odisha. This development has paved the way for the construction of the Neradi Barrage in Srikakulam district, marking a significant step forward in strengthening the region’s irrigation infrastructure.
